Why The Law Of Attraction May Not Be Working For You As Well As It Could
I chanced upon this gem at Choosing Prosperity From The Inside-Out today. It illustrates just what can happen to you when you when you step onto the path of self-improvement, and some steps you can take to get back on track. You can find the whole article at: Choosing Prosperity: Lessons from Quitting the Prosperity Game and I encourage you to read it.
The article is in reference to “The Prosperity Game” (which I highly recommend, by the way) that Elyse Hope Killoran has created for Choosing Prosperity, based on the teachings of Abraham-Hicks.
Why do we find things that are really good for us — and that feel really good — and then just let them slip away?
The answer is ‘resistance.’
When our ‘resistance’ to anything becomes greater than our desire, everything comes to a grinding halt.
In every dimension of life, ‘desire’ provides the gas and ‘resistance’ acts as the brakes.
Most often we do not even perceive our resistance, as it is part of deeply entrenched patterns that we have come to accept as the limitations of our ‘reality’. As coach and teacher Max Wellspring explains, ‘our resistance often functions under the radar of our awareness causing us to slow down and struggle more — much like the experience of trying to drive with the hand brake on.’
Playing the Prosperity Game will naturally lead to an increased flow of desire energy — along with a new awareness of whatever resistant stance we have been holding. Because it seems so obvious that playing the game should be fun, people become very confused when a melange of emotions are stirred up - but this is precisely by design!
Resistance is not our enemy.
We don’t want to push against or ‘resist’ feeling resistance.
What we push against becomes more pronounced in our experience as in, ‘what we resist, persists.’
What we do want to do with resistance is to ease it, soothe it, reduce it and dissolve it away.
So many people discover the Law of Attraction, get excited, then believe their desires are not manifesting as they should. What they fail to learn is that internal resistance can block the manifestations of intention very solidly. Let’s look at what Abraham, through Esther Hicks, describes as the three steps to intentionally using the Law of Attraction:
- Ask. “You can’t help but do this.” Your thought of what you desire is the asking part. That’s why “you can’t help but do this”. Merely offering the desire is all that it takes to start the process.
- Answer. “The Universe answers…every time…no exceptions.” This means that whenever you offer a thought, the manifestation process begins immediately, without question. Your prayers are being answered.
- Recieve. “You must get yourself into alignment with what you want.” You’ve asked, the Universe (or God–don’t get hung up on terminology) has answered. It is now up to you to open yourself up to the manifestation of your desires, match your ‘vibrational energy’ to what it is you want.
Step 3 is where we all miss the mark. We offer resistance to the manifestation process, and the train roars right on by and we’re oblivious to its passing. All we see is that what we wanted didn’t show up. The fact is that it did show up, but we missed it. We didn’t accept the guidance that was being offered, and the realization of our desire went right past us.
I’ll have more on this once I figure it out for myself…

This sounds akin to what Wattles says about gratitude in The Science of Getting Rich.
The moment you permit your mind to dwell with dissatisfaction upon things as they are, you
begin to lose ground. You fix attention upon the common, the ordinary, the poor, and the squalid
and mean; and your mind takes the form of these things. Then you will transmit these forms or
mental images to the Formless, and the common, the poor, the squalid, and mean will come to
you.

It’s in the public domain, so you can find it at lots of places on the net, including a pdf on the Recommended Reading page of my site.
Thank you for the link in your sidebar. It looks pretty snifty.

As for the link: I’m happy to. You have a lot to offer people, and I’m looking forward to exploring your site further!

I just caught this post today - so ironic after I just blogged about what it took for me to finally get the Law of Attraction to work in my life.
The limiting beliefs and decisions we make are the biggest barriers to getting the LOA to work - yet releasing and removing these barriers has been extremely difficult for me in the past.
I just got rid of more limiting stuff in the last three weeks than I have in the last three years combined - and in 36 hours, found that the Law of Attraction is alive and well, and working profoundly in my life.
Thanks for the post!
Steve on October 26th, 2006 at 10:47 am
Wendy, as I commented on your site, it would be informative to have a little more detail about your ridding yourself of limiting beliefs, if you can make time in your obviously very busy schedule to write about it a little…
I’ve experienced some difficulty with that myself–mainly in the area of identifying the limiting belief or rule, and then in actually making the change.
Thanks for commenting–I love your insight!
Wendy Piersall :: eMom on October 26th, 2006 at 1:29 pm
Steve - I left a longer comment back on my own site - but can also add this - the freedom I got was taught in my NLP Certification course - which included a certification in Time Line Therapy (R).
I have found TLT to be the most powerful personal development tool I have come across in over 20 years. If I told you the results I get by using it I would sound like an over-hyped infomercial and I think I would actually lose credibility - not because I am lying, but because the results are THAT good, and really EASY.
To be frank, I think it would put a lot of motivational speakers and therapists out of business
If you google Time Line Therapy or Tad James, the ‘founder’ of the technique, you can learn way more about it than you could from me. Enjoy!!
Kammie K. on October 27th, 2006 at 7:09 am
Steve,
“Resistance is not our enemy.”
That line really hits home for me right now. Funny how when you learn the LOA and start playing with it
you don’t think you can ever go back to the “old ways” of thinking. But sometimes they creep back in.
I’ve had some resistance lately and am observing what that’s all about.
Thanks for the article and the reminder to keep on keepin’ on and focusing on what we DO want.
And thanks for the link-love in the b-roll! I appreciate the add.
Be well and stay passionate,
Kammie K.
Steve on October 27th, 2006 at 8:22 am
“sometimes they creep back in.”
They do! Tony Robbins suggests making a list of 4 or 5 questions you ritually ask yourself every morning to help keep on track and shift your awareness from day-to-day ’stuff’. I’ve heard Jack Canfield and James Ray mention the same sort of thing: every morning when you get up, focus on your goal for the day, feel grateful for what you already have, and then get on with things.
I think it demonstrates the power of focus, and how important it is to take time out of your day periodically to REfocus.
Thanks, Kammie!
P.S. And, perhaps most importantly, having something to focus on.
Steve Olson on October 29th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
Steve,
I just learned about the law of attraction in September. I have applied it to my life. I put forth an intention to build a high traffic website on September 17th 2006 with no real plan for accomplishing the goal. I’ve put out a bunch of other intentions as well.
The law is working. I’ve had over 130,000 visitors so far in October.
I think I could have gotten even farther, but my fear keeps creeping up and telling me stuff like “What do you think you’re doing? You’re a nobody. Nobody wants to read your drivel.” I have to drive those thoughts out of my head constantly. If I could coach my sub-conscious into dumping this doubt and fear, I bet I’d have 500,000 visitors right now.
Love your blog,
Steve O.

Wendy said, “I have found TLT to be the most powerful personal development tool I have come across in over 20 years.”
Have you tried EFT (emofree.com)? Its developer is fond of NLP too, but he thinks EFT is more effective.
Steve Johnson on November 7th, 2006 at 3:58 pm
Roman, that’s very interesting. It does remind me, though, of a story that Tony Robbins told about watching another practitioner practice ‘temporal tapping’ and how it was effective with one person, but not another. He theorized that it WAS effective on the one person because of the principle of pattern interruption, and was NOT effective on the other because the other person didn’t really want to lose the phobia he claimed to have. In other words, his phobia served a purpose and he didn’t see any reason to rid himself of it. In Robbins’ terms, he lacked leverage.
Regardless, I’m always open to new ways to make changes. It’s definitely worth a closer look, and the neural points he references really do exist, and are major nerve ending points.
Thanks for the comment and the tip!
Roman on November 9th, 2006 at 6:28 pm
Steve, please read these two short articles to get a different explanation:
http://www.emofree.com/Archives/Archive60.htm
http://www.emofree.com/tutorial/tutorbtwo.htm
Sometimes a practitioner simply doesn’t know how to apply a technique in a particular case and blames the technique
I’ve used the investigative approach described in the first article for a an intensive problem I had had for years. During the process, when I got to a moment in my childhood, the problem was lifted and it almost never returned. It later returned, once, with a much lower intensity, and after the same process it left for good. I didn’t even have to do the tapping. Apparently, mere realization of a “core aspect” can be hugely important. Probably not for nothing do some people believe that we are controlled the most by what we aren’t aware of.

i try this law of attraction for a long time now…..one hole year. it simply not working for me. i got more debts than the usual. i don t think that is working for anybody. yes i have seen many prosperous people and many not so prosperous. it seems to me that we can not change our way in life by simply allowing positive thoughts . you simply can not be financially prosperous only by thinking that you are. you can not be rich if you only believe you are. all this internet teachings about being prosperous only by thinking and allowing it to happen is simply bullshit. i know there is a god. i know that we are multi spiritual beings learning our ways in the material game of life. i know also that prosperity is not the good way to learn our lessons in this life. life is not made to be easy. the one who get much material wealth in life, in after life he usually go to the grey areas. so…we are not born to be rich and famous. and if we are after death we pay the price.
Roman on March 9th, 2007 at 9:20 am
jalba, but other people say it works for them, in financial and other areas of life. Perhaps, it “hasn’t worked” for you because you hold a strong belief that “life is not made to be easy”, etc.
Assulromeo on March 18th, 2007 at 8:27 pm
For me it was difficult to make the law of attraction too but I finally did it, I just didn’t give up. I kept studying reading, trying new things until I found what feelings and beliefs were keeping me broke and when I found out my life changed very fast.
My fear of poverty, my anger towards money, feelings of not enough, that I was alone and no one helped me were the main factors that stopped my allowing.
Now I allow very fast, I feel happy when I pay, I don´t think money is bad or good it just is and it loves me, I feel safe and protected and those feelings are being reflected back to me in financial security, free things everywhere, money in the bank, lots of ideas, bussinesses etc. etc.
LOA really works

“The fact is that it did show up, but we missed it.” This is the saddest statement I’ve ever read on LOA and ‘manifestations’. It’s crap and anybody with an ounce of common sense knows this. The Mercedes I “asked for has never showed up. I think I would have remembered something so sweet, don’t you? The $10,000 I asked for never showed up. It wasn’t because I ‘missed it’. It never appeared. Etc., etc. You guys go on believing in this “if I think it, it will come” hocuspocus. It’s just sad that there are so many people who need to believe in something, anything, and this is what they choose.
Steve Johnson on March 21st, 2007 at 8:02 am
Thanks for taking the time to contribute, Mani. All viewpoints are welcome here.
Personally, I don’t think it’s sad at all that someone who needs to believe ‘in something, anything…’ chooses themselves to believe in. What else is there?
Mani on March 21st, 2007 at 11:51 am
Steve, thanks for staying courteous! We should always believe in ourselves, first and foremost. Believing in yourself is what gets us what we want out of life. Manifestations are silly. No one has the ‘will’ to materialize anything. We have the will to make it happen through beleiving in ourselves, and working towards physical action to achieve those tangible things. We cannot wish it. We cannot ask, believe, and receive and then, POOF, it’s there.
IMHO, part of the problem with folks today is that they feel like they have to believe in something because they’re missing someing in their lives. What to believe in is looking back…in the mirror. It all starts there. Not some scheme by a group of people who are making millions of dollars telling people all they have to do is think it up, and it becomes theirs…and when it doesn’t happen? Well, of course! DUH! They didn’t believe hard enough. Hogwash!
Steve Johnson on March 21st, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Mani, you’re welcome.
I think where we might differ is in our interpretation of the word ‘manifestation’. Your comment seems to relate manifestation to something that Samantha would do in Bewitched.
When something or someone appears in your life, is that not a manifestation of will? Many of us believe that it is. Other people think that it’s due to chance or hard work, coincidence maybe. I don’t believe in chance or coincidence, and I don’t believe hard work in and of itself brings anything but weariness.
I don’t think you’d argue with me when I say that the beginnings of having, doing, or being is in ‘thinking it up’. You dream something, then you get to a level of belief that it WILL happen, and you find opportunities and coincidences appear in front of you–if you are open to seeing them.
So you and I say pretty much the same things, but you seem to think that a person can do it all by themselves, through force of will. I think there’s a greater power at work, and the thoughts we hold are how we can use that power to change our lives for the better.
I think the difference is between slamming your shoulder countless times against a closed door to open it vs. turning the doorknob. Both ways will eventually open the door, but one way is much easier, much faster and much less painful than the other.

Great post. I’m a huge fan of Abraham-Hicks myself and completely agree with the fact the game is played in step 3, the allowing process is where most of us are stuck at.
Also, I thought some of your visitors might be interested in learning more about the law of attraction. It’s a law of attraction resource website I’ve put up with free law of attraction articles, videos and audios about the law of attraction that will transform your way of thinking, doing, being and having.
Law Of Abundant Attraction

Leo Foster on July 28th, 2007 at 10:51 am
Hello, this was a post to make people think and THINK BETTER!
With all due respect to those who talk to entities and receive
information of CRUCIAL importance to the entire human race, , and then pass that info ONLY to those who can PAY for their books, seminars and lectures….. either the entities don’t really care, they are an invention of someone’s imagination, those entities need cash, or those entities are not capable enough to provide the “receiver’ with better sources of income so that the information from the entities can be given freely to everyone … not only to those who can afford to PAY for it!
I am always very suspicious of those who claim to receive such info that ‘allegedly’ belongs to the entire humanity … and then they SELL it only to those who can afford to PAY.
Of course, it could also mean that the Law of Attraction ONLY permits such info to be given to those who have enough cash to pay. Or maybe th Law of Attraction only works for those who already have enough money and can afford to pay, right?
The Law of Attraction is only a commercial invention to make SALES!
The real name is the ANCIENT Law of Belief.
The BIG mistake of all these gurus is that they all talk about
raising your vibrations, and blah, blah.
NONE of them will make the necessary connection to tell you that your vibrations (frequencies) causing trouble are caused by your PREDOMINANT THOUGHTS.
And your PREDOMINANT thoughts are caused by what you PREDOMINANTLY FOCUS ON — not what you focus once in a blue moon.
And here is the KEY to the Law of Attraction…… which NOBODY is telling you .. until this moment of course…. your PREDOMINANT THOUGHTS and what you PREDOMINANTLY FOCUS ON
are caused by your BELIEF, VALUES and RULES..
You may put beliefs, values and rules under the overall category of BELIEFS.
Yes, BELIEFS arethe FINAL CAUSE of the vibrations (frequencies you are transmitting).
And as long as you have in your Subconscious the SAME old, limiting beliefs, you will continue to have the SAME old thoughts, continue to FOCUS on the SAME old things, and your Subconscious will have NO other choice but to keep transmitting
the SAME old vibrations (frequencies), which keep attracting to you the SAME old, undesirable results.
The “ENTITIES” don’t explain that. They must be a bit dumb!
Maybe they don’t know. Maybe they want to disseminate FALSE
information.
Maybe you will benefit by reading a few articles such s “Millionaire Mind - The Law of Attraction - How it works”.
for you to REALLY know what it is and how it works.
The great, famous Law of Attraction is nothing else but the ANCIENT Law of Belief, which states that’ whatever you deeply believe, you will materialize in your life”, “It is done unto you as you believe”, “What you believe is what you get”, “Man must always manifets at all levels of existence the sum total of his subconscious beliefs”.
The Law of Attraction is a NEW name to SELL more products. That’s all.
So, if you really want to learn how to make the law of Attraction work for you, learn how to identify and eliminate all your limiting beliefs and conflicting values related to the SPECIFIC goal you have in mind. And then, replace them with better, more useful beliefs and values that support that SPECIFIC goal.
Anything else will FAIL — even if you talk to all the entities in this and all parallel universes.
,
(1) Set a new goal
(2) Identify any limiting beliefs and conflicting values OPPOSING this goal
(3) Eliminate those limiting beliefs and conflicting values
ONLY at this point will your vibrations start to change.
(4) Program in your Subconscious useful beliefs and values which SUPPORT your new goal and will allow you to PREDOMINANTLY FOCUS ON what you want.
(5) Program the new goal DAILY in your Subconscious until it materializes
(6) Watch your Self-Talk and instantly stop any thoughts that
make you FOCUS on the undesirable results
That is the process!
Anything else will lead you to frustration.
You can visualize until you are blue in the face, feel all the emotions you want to, sense all the sensations, the smells, etc., etc.. ALL these are only temporary and last only for the BRIEF time you are doing your meditation/visualization/programming.
The moment you get out of it and return to normal conscious awareness (BETA levels of mind), your OLD beliefs/values are still there, causing you to think the SAME old thoughts, which causes you to FOCUS on the SAME old things, which causes your Subconscious to broadcast the SAME old vibrations, thus attracting to you the SAME old undesirable results.
Unless you FIRST identify and eliminate all the limiting beliefs and conflicting values and rules related to the new goal, you will continue transmitting the SAME old vibrations — no matter what any REAL or FABRICATED entities tell you!,
Let those who desire to make the universal Law of Belief work for them study this message.
A few will get it. The rest will continue defending and following their favorite gurus gurus, teachers, etc. and putting more money into their pockets– instead of finding the truth for themselves.
Congratulations for starting this discussion so that all of us (including me) can think independently and THINK BETTER!

Just an addition to my previous post.
One of the techniques that can be used to get rid of those limiting beliefs and install new ones is by using something referred to as Time Line Therapy (TLT).
You can even use it to go back to time of birth and install new beliefs that will be trigger (be activated) in the next month!
But, the FASTEST way to make changes is to learn the MOST VALUABLE tool you can ever learn — placing yourself at will in the deepest alpha and theta levels of mind. In other words, to scare those who are superstitious and close-minded===>>> SELF HYPNOSIS. It is the fastest too known to men/women to go into a deep altered state, where the Conscious mind is set to the side, and new info can go directly to the Subconscious mind.
You can use self-hypnosis to identify/eliminate those limiting
beliefs and conflicting values and rules.
You can even practice the specific techniques of Time Line Therapy while you are in a deep trance and you DO IT to yourself. No need for any external hypnotist ar certified NLP/TTL practitioner.
Become your own HYPNOTIST and practitioner.
I enjoyed reading all the posts how people have different
perspectives and even false ‘facts’ and erroneous info about the Law of Attraction.
Best of success to all.
Leo Foster.

Leo, thanks for the comment.
I hope you notice that I removed the links to your sales page. I thought it kind of funny that you’re ranting against those who sell their knowledge, yet you do the same.
It’s evident you haven’t read, or didn’t fully understand, Esther Hick’s “Ask and It Is Given”. Yes, she talks about ‘raising your vibrations’. She/Abraham (however you want to put it) gives you ways to monitor your emotions and thoughts, and to raise them to a beneficial level.
Tony Robbins does the same, albeit from a different viewpoint.
Napoleon Hill, in “Think and Grow Rich”, says it also.
“The Master Key System” by Charles Haanel, and “The Science of Getting Rich” (the impetus for “The Secret”) teach the same thing.
Same message, different delivery.
It is proven that people attach more value to those things that they give up something to attain.
<em>Think and Grow Rich</em> has been around for decades, as has <em>The Science of Getting Rich.</em> They can be found for free online, and in used bookstores for a pittance. Yet people don’t take advantage of the knowledge that they contain.
Yet this same knowledge, packaged as <em>The Secret</em> has sold in the millions and has opened the eyes of countless numbers of people.
This is a bad thing?
Is the knowledge that you’re peddling a bad thing?
P.S. What kind of conversions are you getting from your sales page? It doesn’t SEEM like it would convert very well. I’m interested in knowing.

in response to Leo Foster—- who says “the Law of Attraction ONLY permits such info to be given to those who have enough cash to pay”
When I started learning the law of attraction I did it without having to pay for anything because there is a lot of free information in the Hick’s site.
And when I got results I bought their books and their tapes and then I earned more money and I still keep buying their material wich is much more valious than the $$ price I pay for it. The abundance I experience today is because I practiced what they say.
I pay them gladly because they have changed my life hugely.

I thoroughly agree with Leo’s comments, they really hit home I feel.I have been studying the “Secret Movie” phenomenon & applying the LOA for some time, & I came to the exact same conclusion that the issue of LIMITING BELIEFS is the dominant & consistently overlooked factor or missing link in the LoA process which the makers/participants of the film continually fail to address!
I have posted this viewpoint earlier on another site (Masters of the Secret) because I’m amazed that this is just not getting through to people who are basically being taken for a ride most of the time & suffering needlessly like I have been!.
At a certain point this fact about the vibration of hidden limiting beliefs as the dominant issue became blindingly obvious to me.So my work now has been to consistently root out these limiting beliefs & replace them with positive ones as Leo mentioned, although I arrived at the same conclusion by myself.
To this end I have found EFT, subliminal messaging software & brainwave entrainment–something akin to hypnosis– extremely useful as tools to this end.
Everyone is UNIQUE & everyone finds the method that best resonates with them.I do not wish to be a mere copy of Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, although their ways of doing things might at some point be helpful I admit, but to BE UNIQUELY WEALTHY on my own terms in my own way — MUCH MORE EXCITING !!! I have always been a maverick & a rebel who questions authority & I know I can do things differently & perhaps even better.. I just LOVE MYSELF that way!!! I have no models to follow except the UNIQUE one written in my own Soul in which I am sowing the seeds of infinite abundance & prosperity ..:)
Thanks again Leo…finally someone who’s speaking up & telling things like they are no BS..;) I hope alot of people take his words to heart even if they don’t buy his program.
I wish everyone the best !

This may shock you all but how about this one which I just tapped to the surface with EFT…”Blessed are the poor for they shall inherit the earth”…”It’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go to heaven”…we’ve all been fed this BS in the name of religion from our earliest years which is keeping most of humanity enslaved.
Isn’t it time we RADICALLY parted from the teachings of a Nazarene carpenter from 2000 years ago, be they distorted/misinterpreted or not (which is the rationalization our conscious minds give us for anything that we’re attached to even if it doesn’t work for us e.g. a bad relationship). This of course is totally beside the point. The point being this rubbish is still floating around in the subconscious minds of every single person on this planet preventing them accessing the infinite abundance that is their birthright! Who has the courage to do that, find the truth for themselves & risk “being thrown in hell for eternity” or even ending up creating heaven on earth ?
Glenn on April 21st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Khurram,
With all due respect, the “Nazarene carpneter”, also said:
“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” Mark 11:24
“I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt…you can say to this mountain, go throw yourself into the sea, and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Matt 21:21
I too used to believe the verses you quoted to be negative until I studied further and realized that those statements were warnings about letting money blind you to your duty to your fellow human being. Money can make you powerful, and if you are not rooted in the all loving God, it can be detriment to you - where the same person who if poor has nothing to fall back on for security except faith in God.
The “Nazarene carpenter” (Jesus) preached and practiced “the secret”. Following these teachings has been very successful for his modern day minister Joel Osteen, who is pure positive energy:
